The story that shaped this work
Asian Girls Ignite was founded in 2020 by Joanne Liu and Mehgan Yen during a time when many AANHPI young people were navigating isolation, disrupted schooling, and increased racialized harm.
What began as a small pilot with a handful of middle school students quickly revealed the importance of identity-affirming spaces rooted in mentorship and belonging.
At AGI, storytelling has always been central. Students share their experiences, mentors reflect on their journeys, and community members speak honestly about what it means to grow up between cultures. This practice of sharing and listening continues to shape how our programs evolve.
Today, AGI has grown into a community-rooted organization guided not only by its founders, but also by the students, families, staff, and board who continue to build it together.
