Art speaks. Art carries truth. Art helps us tell stories that the world does not always want to hear. Join Asian Girls Ignite and Chinese American transracial/transnational adoptee and Abolitionist/Anti-supremacist Illustrator/Visual Storyteller, Madalyn Drewno, for a hands-on workshop where students explore how art and activism walk together with intention. 🎨

AGI middle schoolers will create postcards that speak to the times. They talk with each other, share reactions, and learn in community as they explore images, quotes, articles, and artwork connected to current events. They think about the stories behind them and the voices missing from them.

What to expect

  • Create postcards that carry a message you want the world to hear ✍️

  • Participate in a gallery walk to explore media connected to current events 🖼️

  • Talk about how art uplifts movements without replacing the work of activism, and why intention matters

  • Learn how artists use creativity to advocate for marginalized voices

  • Practice decentering yourself to understand stories beyond your own 🔍

  • The feeling of curiosity, healthy discomfort, and the spark to speak up ✨

Students leave with art made with purpose and a clearer sense of how their creativity supports and honors the stories of others. They begin to see how their voice guides them through challenging topics and helps them show up with authenticity. They also see how connection and shared reflection help them grow together.

📄A note for families

This workshop includes discussion of current events such as the genocide in Palestine, immigration and ICE raids, and food injustice. Annabel will share all gallery walk materials with families before the event to keep communication open. You can ask questions or share comments at any time.

About Madalyn Drewno

Madalyn Drewno (she/her) is a Chinese American transracial/transnational adoptee and Abolitionist/Anti-supremacist Illustrator/Visual Storyteller. She returns as storyteller after leading our 2023 middle school workshop Ink and Inspiration, where students experimented with ink using twigs, wood chips, and branches, and heard how Madalyn connects with her AANHPI identity through creative expression.

Madalyn believes in the power of storytelling to challenge dominant narratives shaped by white supremacy and to build meaningful connections with each other. Her work centers empathy, healing, and our shared path toward collective liberation. As a Storyteller, she uplifts AGI’s mission by showing young people how their identities, experiences, and personal healing can spark deeper understanding and care for others.

She finds joy in swimming and film analysis, and food that feels like home often brings her back to Japanese or Chinese dishes.
